I’ve spent most of my life in and around water and as a result, swimming has become a very important part of my life since childhood. In addition to swimming, I enjoy scuba diving and sailing, fully embracing the life aquatic!

I inherited my passion for swimming from my father who was a successful competitive swimmer. Following in his footsteps, I too was a competitive swimmer and also a life guard in my teens. Later, I completed my studies in the Academy of Physical Education obtaining a Master’s Degree together with full swimming coach qualifications. Since then I have pursued a career in the field of swimming teaching and coaching.

In every lesson, I strive to ensure that my pupils make fast progress, tailored to their ability and development, in friendly and relaxed surroundings.

My approach is not only to teach swimming, but also to promote lifelong participation in water-based activities for all ages and abilities, hopefully engendering a love of the water to match my own.

I began swimming for several local clubs at the age of 3. Swimming has always been in my life which gave me the confidence and passion to work in swimming. I have also tried out other water sports such as windsurfing, snorkelling, sailing and water polo.

I started out as a lifeguard in 2013, working with swimming teachers on a weekly basis. This allowed me to pick up different teaching techniques and styles, and many different ideas.  I have been a qualified Level 2 teacher since the summer of 2015. I teach a variety of ages and abilities, each having their own achievements and future goals in swimming. I believe swimming is a life skill which everyone should have due to the importance of being able to swim for survival.

Teaching is a rewarding profession as you are helping others develop key skills. Being able to see a pupil start as a beginner and develop into a great swimmer is a positive and motivating feeling for me. I try to keep my lessons fun and appropriate for each pupil. As a teacher you need to keep an open mind as each swimmer is different, so it is important to adapt lessons around them to optimise their success.

I started learning to swim when I was 4 years old at my local pool. It seems that I had a natural talent for swimming, so I progressed quickly and became a successful swimmer, receiving numerous awards.

After ending my competitive swimming career, I decided to do my BSc in Physical Education and Sports Science, specialising in swimming.  I have always had an interest in water-based sports. Even as a child, I would help my younger cousins learn how to swim.  Swimming is one of the most important life skills to learn at a young age, therefore I decided to become a swimming coach to facilitate my knowledge and teach people to gain water confidence.  I have had wonderful coaches who were caring, patient and supportive when I was young – I would love all my new swimmers to have the same positive experience and I will do my best to make that happen.

It is very rewarding to help people of all ages learn a love for swimming while teaching them the skills for swimming safely.  No two days are the same when you teach swimming lessons. Each child is different, and they have unique fears and motivations. When you teach them how to swim, you get to tailor your swimming lesson to meet their individual needs. You’ll come to find that some of your students are fearless and love to jump into deep water without thinking twice while others are more cautious. Some students are easily distracted and talkative while others are timid and uncertain. Few things are more rewarding than watching your students progress and feeling proud of their accomplishments.

As a child I didn’t swim due to medical issues. Then as an adult having trained as a nursery officer, I got a job in a local nursery with a pool. Working there encouraged me to learn to swim and with my passion for child development, I was really motivated to become a fully qualified coach. Having asthma swimming has been a great benefit to me and it has shown me how beneficial it is for so many medical conditions.

For almost 25 years I have worked with many clients with special needs in one to one, groups and school swimming lessons. I see it as a life skill that is essential for everyone.

I first learnt how to swim after failing stage two of the learn to swim program in Year 5 of primary school. I was also called names because of my weight, which gave me the motivation to teach myself how to swim. Through that process, a genuine love of swimming began to take root and I enjoyed the feeling of freedom I experienced while being in the water. After doing my first Swimathon in memory of a friend who had passed away, I went on to develop my running and cycling, eventually finding home in the triathlon world.

A few years ago I became a lifeguard, and by spending every day poolside it became clear that it was only a matter of time until I decided to qualify as a swim teacher. As an athlete myself, I enjoy constantly learning about the technical elements of swimming and I strive to pass on those learnings through my work.

In one thirty-minute lesson you can noticeably increase the confidence and skills of a child while overcoming negative beliefs and fears. There’s never a dull day- working with children is unpredictably fun. It takes a deep discernment to be able to apply your knowledge as a swim teacher to the level a child is at, and make progress. My own knowledge of swimming increases every day as I update my own skill set and strive to invest in my continual professional and athletic development.

I think every child should learn to swim simply because we live on an island! Physical literacy is so important in a child’s psychological and physiological development and swimming is a safe and fun way to complement that growth. It not only teaches a life skill, but also allows a child to learn valuable transferable skills they can take with them across life. Things like overcoming fear go a long way in showing a child what they are truly capable of and unlocking their full potential.

I seek to bring out the sparkle in the eyes of my students when they learn something new. As such, I enjoy developing a child’s core aquatic skills and water confidence through fun and engaging challenges. I am also keep in touch with my inner child, which allows me to meet children at their level, making every session one in which progress is made while keeping learner safety paramount.
