Having a fear of swimming can be hard to overcome and many parents who suffer from this are extremely worried that they will pass this fear onto their children.
Techniques to overcome the fear
The techniques that we use for children to overcome the fear of water can also be used for adults. The first thing to do is simply get your feet wet and if possible try to gradually walk into the swimming pool into deeper water. Make sure you walk as far as you feel comfortable and stop.
You can then start to splash water onto your face and at the same time remember that this action is no different to what you would do at the sink when you wash your face.
When we teach the toddlers on our programme we try to teach them how to hold their breath under water and breathe out into the water – blowing bubbles! This would be the next step in overcoming your fear of water.
Another great tip would be to hold the side and practice kicking with your body stretched out. This will come easier to some people over others.
The most important thing is to not rush to make progress. Overcoming a fear, takes time and perseverance. One day, it will just click but you need to be patient and make sure you are visiting the pool at least once a week.
